Prince Albert expat Josh Stumpf has been making waves in the Saskatchwan country music scene, and the 2024 NSMZ Rising Star Award is just the latest milestone in his rapidly growing career. Stumpf, who made the move to Saskatoon in 2022 to pursue music full-time, has captured the attention of fans and industry professionals alike with his authentic sound and natural talent.
“My goal ultimately is to be able to do it full time and to make an impression on somebody the way lots of these artists who have influenced me have. To be able to have a little kid look up and say 'I wanna be like that guy' that's kinda the dream,” Stumpf says.
Over the past year and change, Stumpf has seen a surge in his musical journey, marked by several standout releases that have set the stage for even bigger things in 2025. His debut single, “Drink Me a Lullaby,” became an immediate fan favorite. With its heartfelt lyrics and catchy melody, the track quickly earned recognition and proved Stumpf’s potential as a rising artist in the country genre. Following that success, he released another hit single, “That Song In This Truck,” in March 2024. The track resonated deeply with listeners due to its nostalgic and relatable themes, further cementing Stumpf as a name to watch in country music. This combination of strong songwriting and Stumpf’s unique vocal style has made him a standout in a competitive industry.
In June 2024, Stumpf took another significant step in his career with the release of his self-titled EP. The project showcased his versatility as an artist, with tracks that explored a wide range of emotions and experiences, all framed within his distinct country sound. The EP received praise for its authenticity and for giving fans a deeper look into Stumpf’s creative world. It also demonstrated his growth as both a performer and a songwriter, offering a perfect balance of introspective lyrics and accessible melodies.
Another highlight of 2024 for Stumpf was headlining his own Sunset Country Music Festival, a landmark event that not only celebrated his music but also his growing presence in the country music scene. With festival proceeds going towards the purchase of musical instruments for Ranch Ehrlo, the festival was not only a testament to how far Stumpf has come musically but it also demonstrated that he has a heart for his community and charitable causes. The festival drew a large crowd and provided him with the opportunity to connect with fans on a personal level. His performance was a true celebration of his music and an unforgettable experience for those who attended.
A significant part of Stumpf’s appeal lies in his authenticity. His music is rooted in real experiences, and that genuine connection is evident in every song he writes and every performance he delivers. Stumpf’s journey into country music was shaped by his love for the genre, which he discovered early on through his family and the music they played. His influences—artists like Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen—are evident in his sound, yet Stumpf has managed to carve out his own niche with his distinct raspy voice and heartfelt lyrics.
“My goal ultimately is to be able to do it full time and to make an impression on somebody the way lots of these artists who have influenced me have. To be able to have a little kid look up and say 'I wanna be like that guy' that's kinda the dream.”
"Music's always been like therapy to me.," Stumpf tells NSMZ, "If I'm having a terrible day, I go to the truck and just drive around and play some sappy music. If I'm headed out to the lake and having a good time you're putting on some rock music and flying down the highway or sitting on the beach drinking a beer playing some chill music. Music is everywhere. It's surrounds absolutely everything. So if I get to be somebody that gets to put something (meaningful and therapeutic) like that out.... that's just awesome."
Songwriting has also become an important aspect of Stumpf’s career. What started as a casual exploration of his musical abilities has turned into a passion. Working with experienced songwriters such as Donny Parenteau early on, Stumpf quickly grew in his ability to craft memorable songs. His creative process can vary, but it often begins with an idea or hook that he develops into a full song, sometimes in just a few hours.
"I would come prepared with something or sometimes nothing, maybe just an idea," Stumpf says of his time working with Parenteau, "The sessions were only supposed to be a half hour but we would kind of get into the flow of it and we'd go for a whole hour, sometimes an hour and a half and just bang out a whole song. Like a song a week pretty much. "
As Stumpf's craft evolved, he began to branch out on his own and explore his own personal techniques for writing songs.
"Lots of times I start with a hook line. A cool comparison or metaphor is really cool and I want to put that into a song. Sometimes it's just I'm sitting on the couch and a line pops into my head and I write it down and then start working around that," Stumpf explains, "Sometimes it's just starting with a couple of chords and seeing what comes out. It's a little different every time and kinda depends on the day. Sometimes I can write a whole song in 15 mins sometimes I'll be sitting on one for six months.... Sometimes I'll start with a melody. I got countless voice memos in my phone. I'll just be driving in the truck humming something that makes no sense."
"
While his recent success has been impressive, Stumpf remains humble and focused on his future. His plans include heading to Nashville, where he hopes to continue building on his momentum and further solidify his place in the country music scene.
The 2024 NSMZ Rising Star Award recognizes Stumpf’s achievements, but it’s clear that this is just the beginning. With his dedication, natural talent, and relentless drive, Stumpf is poised to continue climbing the ranks of country music. Fans are already eagerly anticipating his next releases, and with a promising year ahead, it’s safe to say that Josh Stumpf’s star will only continue to rise.
