Amigos Cantina hosted a stellar night of live music on November 16, 2024, featuring Mo Kenney in support of their recent release From Nowhere (out September 6, 2024) and hometown favorite Anna Haverstock with her full band.
Kicking off the night, Anna Haverstock delivered an energetic, high-energy set that had the crowd dancing and soaking in the lively atmosphere. Known for themes of sisterhood and friendship, Anna’s performance showcased both fan-favorite hits and new tracks. Joining her on stage were some well-known names from the Saskatoon music scene, including her sister Jill Haverstock, Julie Maier of The Garrys on bass, Matt Smith on guitar, and Matthew McLaughlin on drums. Together, they created a powerful and dynamic sound that set the tone for the night.
Following Anna’s electric set, Mo Kenney and their band took the stage as a tight-knit trio featuring bass, drums, and guitar. Their performance drew heavily from From Nowhere, immersing the audience in the emotional and introspective soundscapes of the album.
The record From Nowhere offers an introspective, sensitive, and immersive listening experience. The tracks dive deep into Mo Kenney’s soul, revealing raw truths with blunt, emotional lyrics that captivate listeners. The track “Self Doubt” stands out as a powerful, introspective piece, exploring themes of time’s passage, the burdens of responsibility, heightened anxiety, and, as the title suggests, self-doubt.
Another notable track, “Bad Times,” delves into themes of struggle, redemption, and gratitude for the challenges that shaped them. The song reflects on their journey toward sobriety in 2020 and the life transformations that followed. Its message of finding strength in moments of brokenness resonates as a universal truth.
“Love You Better” is another standout track, capturing the desire to be better for the people you love. Its brilliance lies in its emotional depth and relatability. Across the album, Mo Kenney creates immersive soundscapes that invite listeners to lose themselves in repeated listens.
From Nowhere is a record to savour and reflect upon, and Mo Kenney’s live performance, supported by their bassist and drummer, brought the album to life in a way that was perfectly on par with the studio recording.
