Our Grade: A
With “Highway Money,” Saskatchewan-born artist Josh Stumpf delivers a bright, highway-ready anthem that blends classic country themes with a contemporary, polished sound. It marks his debut with MDM Recordings Inc., and it feels like a song designed to drop right as summer road trip season kicks into gear.
Musically, the track is big and expansive - anchored by crisp guitarwork and a steady, propulsive rhythm that drives it forward. There’s a bit of mandolin tucked in the mix, which adds a nice layer of texture, and the overall production leans into a clean, radio-friendly glossy, shine. It’s got the hallmarks of a country hit: catchy, upbeat, and built to last on a playlist.
Lyrically, “Highway Money” doesn’t try to be overly clever - it taps into well-worn but crowd-pleasing territory. It's a song about freedom, young love, and chasing something just out of reach. What it lacks in surprise, however, it makes up for with confidence and a strong sense of place. The chorus is the standout here. It's hook laden and memorable, the kind that lingers long after the first listen.
Stumpf’s vocal delivery is solid throughout. While not especially flashy or distinct, there’s a steady, grounded quality to his voice that suits the material well. He sounds comfortable in the lane he’s chosen - country with a dash of rock - and that ease gives the song an authentic feel, even with its polished edges.
“Highway Money” doesn’t break new ground, but it doesn’t have to. It’s a feel-good summer track that knows exactly what it wants to be - and hits the mark. With the right momentum, this could easily climb the country charts and cement Stumpf as one of Canada’s next breakout acts.
