Trumpet Triumph: Wayne Bergeron to make Saskatoon debut (Saturday, Oct. 12)

by Scott Roos

In just under two weeks, world renowned, iconic trumpeter Wayne Bergeron will have his debut performance in Saskatoon on Saturday, October 12th. He will be the featured artist performing with the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra (SJO) and Saskatoon Brass Band (SBB) at the Broadway Theatre. The event, named "Trumpet Triumph: An Evening With Wayne Bergeron," promises to be unforgettable, considering Bergeron's reputation as a jazz and industry legend. Aside from performing on the trumpet with great intensity on this night, Bergeron has also hand picked the music that will be performed by both the SJO and SBB. Being recognized as a skilled player in high notes, Bergeron undoubtedly picked pieces that will showcase this particular skill. Nevertheless, his exceptional musicality is expected to shine through as well.

“I'm sending music that I'm very comfortable with that I kind of know. So my preparation (for this concert) is already kind of done,” Bergeron told NSMZ in a telephone interview that happened earlier this month.

“I like to please the crowd and they seem to like (when I play high notes). So I’ll play a lot of high powered things, but within (the pieces I’ve chosen) are also things that maybe have a little more musical taste and integrity and I try to mix it up. So when I do play something high and powerful, it has an impact and I try to play some pretty things and some flugelhorn…. It should be really fun.”

Before the evening event, Bergeron will be leading a free masterclass at 10:30 am in room EDUC 1004, located within the University of Saskatchewan’s Education Building. This masterclass will showcase Bergeron's willingness to share his knowledge and expertise with aspiring musicians, reflecting his commitment to mentorship and guidance. It will offer a chance to experience Bergeron's artistry and passion firsthand, providing a learning opportunity with lasting impact on participants.

It is truly remarkable to anticipate Bergeron's forthcoming performance in Saskatoon, as it promises to be an extraordinary event. Throughout his career, Bergeron has crafted a musical legacy that is deeply intertwined with a unique and captivating style of trumpet playing, earning him admiration from both seasoned professionals in the music industry and aspiring trumpeters looking up to him as a source of inspiration. The upcoming collaboration between Bergeron and the SJO and SBB is set to be a harmonious, (pardon the pun) blend of exceptional talent and artistry, creating a platform where Bergeron's remarkable virtuosity on the trumpet will be prominently showcased.

“I'd like to be just known as an all around musician, I think,” Bergeron said when talking about his amazing legacy, “I don't like being known (exclusively) as a high note trumpet player, even though, you know, it's something I do and I've done a lot of, I've done a lot of other things too…. So I think I would like to be known as a well rounded music studio musician and somebody that could do anything I’m asked to do. So that's what I try to do.”

Music enthusiasts in Saskatoon have a fantastic day and night to look forward to on Saturday, October 12th. The masterclass will offer valuable insights into Bergeron's approach, while the concert will showcase his diverse musical abilities. The concert will start at 7:30 pm.
